I think it’s vitally important that prospective teachers, especially those new to Ukraine, have some sense of what it’s like to work and interact with students whose own daily reality is one of air raid sirens and missile attacks. I hope the authenticity of our teacher’s voices achieves that aim.

On a personal note, as the owner and founder of The London School of English, over the past 27 years, I have witnessed first-hand the transformative affect that our industry has had on the development of English language teaching within Ukraine.

In that time, we have quite literally prepared tens of thousands of young students for success in higher education, across a huge variety of fields whilst at the same time employing a generation of teachers, to many of whom we offered support and even sponsorship for DELTA certification and beyond.

Once the shock of the war, as well as the enormity of what had befallen the country, had subsided I felt strongly that the school owed a duty of care towards these students and staff: it was essential that we carry on.

War tends to focus your mind, reaffirm and even sharpen your core values. The strength of character displayed by the Ukrainian people as a whole is something difficult to put into words.

Bravery is measured in so very many different ways but the steely, understated, quietly spoken courage that our staff and students have shown over the past 500+ days is truly inspiring.
